Small, low-power linear redriver provides ideal solution for smart phones and tablets enabled with the USB Type-C connector

San Jose, Calif.— 10 September 2018 —Parade Technologies, Ltd. (Taiwan OTC: 4966.TWO), a leading high-speed interface, video display, and touch controller IC supplier, today announced the PS8769, a linear redriver designed to restore and improve the signal integrity of the high speed signals passing through the USB Type-C connector.  The device is specifically designed to support up to the 10 Gbps data rate of USB 3.2 Gen 2 superspeed data channels, as well as up to the 8.1 Gbps HBR3 link rate for DisplayPort Alt Mode.  The PS8769 is designed to accommodate all USB 3.2 and DisplayPort Alt mode configurations supported by the USB Type-C connector.

While not providing the full signal restoration capability of a high-speed signal retimer, the PS8769 liner redriver is ideal in applications where lower power and a smaller package size is a priority, making it ideal for USB Type-C enabled handheld devices including smart phones and tablets.  Most such devices also have relatively short channels between the SoC (System on Chip) and the USB Type-C connector, so the performance of a complete retimer is often not needed.

The PS8769 linear redriver function provides channel equalization to reduce ISI jitter and provides some linear signal gain.  This results in protocol-agnostic signal integrity improvement and the transfer of transmitter wave shaping intended for end-to-end channel equalization.  When any lanes are configured for DisplayPort Alt Mode, the PS8769 also intercepts the AUX channel messages used for link training and uses this data to adjust the redriver output settings.

The PS8769 provides support for all four of the differential high-speed signal pairs within the USB Type-C connector.  All USB 3.2 / DisplayPort signal configuration modes are supported, including one or two ports of USB Gen 1 (5 Gbps) or Gen 2 (10 Gbps), two lanes of DisplayPort up to HBR3 (8.1 Gbps) with one port of USB Gen 1 or Gen 2, or four lanes of DisplayPort up to HBR3 (8.1 Gbps).

“The USB Type-C connector and the connectivity it offers is becoming the universal connector,” said Jimmy Chiu, Executive VP of Marketing at Parade Technologies. “As data rates go up, signal integrity devices at the interface connector become even more crucial to ensure compliance margin and interoperability.  By offering retimers, traditional limiting redrivers, and now linear redrivers for USB Type-C applications, we can properly scale the solution for our customer’s system application and signal integrity needs.”

The PS8769 operates from a single 1.8V power supply.  It supports full USB 3.2 power management and has an ultra-low power deep sleep state.  The receiver equalizers are configurable to accommodate system characteristics.

Availability

The PS8769 is available in a 2.7mm x 3.7mm 26-pin QFN Halogen free RoHS package. Samples are shipping now.
