Dual and Single MIPI DSI Input Variants Support Display Resolutions up to 2560×1600

San Jose, Calif.— 27 March 2014 —Parade Technologies Ltd. (Taiwan OTC: 4966.TWO), a leading video display and interface IC supplier, today announced new additions to the company’s video protocol converter product line.  Two new devices, the PS8642 and PS8640, provide conversion from MIPI DSI to eDP, both of which are popular embedded video interfaces standards commonly used within portable computing devices.  These video converter devices enable a MIPI DSI video source, including many SoC devices, to drive an eDP-enabled display panel.

The PS8642 and PS8640 are low power MIPI-to-eDP bridge devices optimized for mobile devices with greater-than-FHD high-resolutions displays.  The PS8642 accepts two channels of MIPI DSI v1.1, with up to four lanes per channel and a transmission rate up to 1.5Gbit/sec per lane.  The device outputs eDP v1.4, up to four lanes with a link rate of up to 3.24Gbit/sec per lane, supporting panel resolutions up to 2560×1600.   The PS8640 accepts one channel of MIPI DSI v1.1, up to four lanes at 1.5Gbit/sec per lane, and outputs eDP v1.4 up to two lanes at 3.24Gbit/sec per lane, supporting panel resolutions up to 2048×1536.

The MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) Alliance DSI (Display Serial Interface) standard was originally developed by the cell phone industry and has been widely adopted into tablet applications, particularly those powered by ARM-based processors.  The VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) standard, originally developed by the PC industry for use in all-in-one and laptop PCs, has also been adopted into tablet applications, including those powered by x86-based processors.  The PS8642 and PS8640 provide MIPI DSI enabled, ARM-based SoC devices the ability to drive eDP based display panels that typically offer larger size and higher resolution.

To help achieve optimized system performance with minimum power consumption, the eDP output of the PS8642 and PS8640 supports VESA’s latest eDP version 1.4 standard.  This includes support for the expanded set of standard link rates, which includes 1.62, 2.16, 2.43, 2.7, and 3.24Gbps, as well as the capability for a reduced output differential output voltage swing down to 200mVpp.

“Because of the rapidly increasing graphics and processing capability of today’s ARM-based SoC devices, combined with the power efficiency, it’s becoming more common that our OEM system customers want to implement such MIPI DSI video sources with higher performance panels that typically use an eDP input” said Jimmy Chiu, EVP of Marketing at Parade Technologies. “The PS8640 and PS8642 bridge this compatibility gap.”
