The PS186 is a DisplayPort v1.4a to HDMI 2.0b video interface converter ideal for cable adapters, docking stations, monitors, television receivers, other applications requiring video protocol conversion.  The input is a DP v1.4a compliant upstream facing port that accepts audio and display data, and the output is an HDMI 2.0b compliant downstream facing port.  In addition to accepting native DisplayPort, the PS186 can also be driven by a USB-C® interface through the use DisplayPort Alt Mode, which is commonly supported by USB-C enabled devices, including Thunderbolt 3 devices and smartphones, that contain a video source or video pass-through.

In supporting DP v1.4a, the PS186 can accept compressed display data using DSC (Display Stream Compression) and a link rate up to HBR3 (8.1 Gbps).  Using the combination of DSC and HBR3, the PS186 only requires two DisplayPort main link lanes to provide full HDMI 2.0b output display resolution support including 4K 60 frames per second 4:4:4 video mode at 24 bits-per-pixel, as well as 4K HDR.  This provides an advantage for USB-C interface applications as this means only two USB-C high-speed channels are needed for DP Alt Mode, allowing the other two high-speed channels to be used for Gen 1 (5Gbps) or Gen 2 (10Gbps) SuperSpeed USB data.  This ability makes the PS186 ideal for USB-C enabled docking stations, mini-docks, or monitors that support both display data and USB data.

The PS186 provides anonymous, automatic operation enabled by an integrated microprocessor that uses an inexpensive external SPI ROM for configuration and microcode. The SPI ROM can be field-updated through the DisplayPort AUX channel or device I2C slave input. System control is also available through the I2C slave input, and an I2C master interface is available for external EDID and expansion functions. The PS186 fully supports both HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.3 content protection, including the HDCP repeater function, with integrated HDCP Rx & Tx keys.
